Rating Program

Instrument Rating (IR)

Fly confidently in clouds and low visibility. The Instrument Rating trains you to navigate solely by reference to your cockpit instruments.

What Can You Do With an Instrument Rating?

An Instrument Rating is added to your pilot certificate and dramatically expands when and where you can fly:

  • Fly in clouds, rain, fog, and other low-visibility conditions
  • Navigate using GPS, VORs, and instrument approach procedures
  • Complete trips that would otherwise be canceled due to weather
  • Become a safer, more proficient pilot overall
  • Required step toward a Commercial Pilot License

The Instrument Rating is considered one of the most valuable ratings a pilot can earn. It teaches you precision flying and how to handle unexpected weather situations safely.

FAA Requirements (14 CFR 61.65)

  • 1.Pilot Certificate: Hold at least a Private Pilot License
  • 2.Language: Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • 3.Knowledge: Pass the FAA Instrument Rating written exam (IRA)
  • 4.Practical Test: Pass an oral and flight exam (checkride) with an FAA examiner
  • 5.Training: Receive instrument ground and flight training from an authorized instructor (CFII)
